About Mao Xuhui
The three decades since China’s reform and opening-up have seen the domestication of the western modern and contemporary art in China. During the process, Mao Xuhui, among many other artists, is the one who has introduced and absorbed western art most thoroughly and profoundly. Through series of works, he has started with modern impressionism, gone through expressionism, neo-representationalism and finally stopped at abstract art. It can also be said that his art has ever been of Paul Cezanne, Edvard Munch, Alberto Giacometti, Giorgio Morandi and Mark Rothko. This is unique in his contemporaries. The Big Mao ( as acquaintances address him), now in his fifties, has always been earnestly following the principles of reflecting truth of life and observing intuition and poetry in art, creating great art with true sensations at day and night.
As an artist, Mao has enlightened us in some way: isn’t it wrong that all of us, including the so-called artists, are seeking after fame and gain in this flighty world? Is this really the nature of life? Where is our soul supposed to rest when we get everything we want? Who will still be capable of leading us to the spiritual paradise by then? The answer is: the lonely great thinkers and artists like Big Mao. No matter how the surrounding world changes, they silently live and work with their divine sense of responsibility and intuition, holding a spiritual torch for advancement of the humankind, leading us to an ever brighter sanctum.
